Pozn.: Fitting Dr Goebbels with his surgical boots, and sharing nuts with the Führer, do not appear to be auspicious beginnings to a young Jew’s career. Philip Morgenstern, however, is a resourceful lad.
In Dear Dr. Goebbels, by Neville Smith (R4, 1415, 30 Nov 01), something of Goebbels‘ private life is revealed. Most people have never heard of Morgenstein, but he was offered an honour by Churchill (which he refused because his boss was not offered one) on the strength of the little ditty he wrote making fun of the Nazi leadership and their unfortunate medical conditions, sung by squaddies to the tune of „Colonel Bogey“:
Hitler, has only got one ball
Goering, has two but very small
Himmler has somthing similar
But poor old Goebbels has no balls at all

Pozn.: On New Year’s Eve 1854, 21 leading scientists sat down to a sumptuous seven course banquet – served in the plastercast mould of a prehistoric beast! They were there to celebrate the creation of 33 life-size dinosaurs in the new Crystal Palace Park – a place where those same monsters still roam today.
‘As flamboyant settings for dinner parties go you’d be hard pushed to beat eating seven courses inside the mould of a life-sized iguanodon. This drama is based on real events and captures the excitement and the exuberance of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins as he sees his superscaled work take shape. It also conveys the frustration of a working class woman from Dorset called Mary Anning.
